Special counsel’s report on Trump’s election interference case to be released to public by appeals court – NBC Connecticut

In a recent ruling, a federal appeals court has allowed the Justice Department to release a report on President-elect Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. However, a judge’s order for a three-day delay before releasing the report has been upheld to allow for further appeals. This means that Trump could potentially seek to block the report’s release through the Supreme Court.

The report was written by special counsel Jack Smith and focuses on Trump’s actions to overturn his election loss, which led to the January 6th attack on the Capitol. Trump had been indicted twice in 2023 and 2024 on counts related to election interference, but the cases were dismissed due to a Justice Department policy against prosecuting sitting presidents.

Attorney General Merrick Garland has stated that he plans to release the report publicly if the judge’s order is overturned. Trump, on the other hand, has indicated that he may pardon numerous defendants involved in the January 6th attack once he assumes office on January 20th.

The ruling by the appeals court keeps intact the delay order issued by Judge Aileen Cannon, providing a brief pause before the report is made public. It remains to be seen whether Trump will appeal to the Supreme Court to prevent the report from being released.
