The town of Portland has appointed Michael Pelton as the new first selectman following the tragic death of member Shaun Manning. Manning, a fire lieutenant and Board of Selectman member, was killed by a driver while crossing Main Street a week before Christmas. He was on his way to a town meeting where he was set to be appointed as town selectman.
Pelton, the longest-serving selectman who has been with the town for 14 years, was chosen to fill the position. He has served on the town’s Board of Education for two terms and on the Board of Selectmen for five years. Pelton was sworn in during a recent meeting.
Tim Lavoy, also a member of the Board of Selectmen, expressed the town’s deep feelings of loss over Manning’s death and emphasized the importance of honoring both Manning’s and Ryan Curley’s legacy of service by coming together to serve the people of Portland.
