Vanessa Roberts Avery, U.S. Attorney for CT, to step down from role

Vanessa Roberts Avery, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut, has announced her resignation ahead of President Donald Trump’s inauguration. Avery, the first black woman to hold this position in the state, was appointed by President Joe Biden in 2022. In her statement, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the nation and the people of Connecticut. Under her leadership, the office focused on prosecuting gun and gang violence crimes, as well as issues such as child exploitation, human trafficking, public corruption, and cybercrime. In 2023, her office recovered over $233 million in criminal and civil actions, ranking third in the nation among all U.S. attorney’s offices. President Trump is expected to nominate Avery’s successor after taking office, while Marc Silverman, the First Assistant U.S. Attorney, will serve as acting U.S. attorney upon Avery’s departure. The resignation will take effect on Jan. 17, giving Avery’s successor time to prepare for their new role.
