Thousands forced to evacuate as wildfires rage in and around Los Angeles

Wildfires tore across the Los Angeles area, destroying homes and prompting evacuations of tens of thousands of residents. The Palisades Fire burned 2,921 acres, destroying many homes, while the Eaton Fire destroyed homes near Altadena. Residents, including seniors, were forced to flee as flames spread rapidly. Over 100 structures were burned in the Eaton Fire, while the Pacific Palisades neighborhood was also affected. Emergency vehicles were hindered by impassable roadways as residents abandoned their vehicles and fled on foot. Santa Ana winds exceeding 100 mph fueled the fires, with lack of rain contributing to the dry conditions. Governor Newsom deployed over 1,400 firefighters to combat the blazes. President Biden canceled plans due to the wildfires, while FEMA approved a grant to help California cover firefighting costs. By early Wednesday, the fires remained uncontained, and over 200,000 people were without power in Los Angeles County. Authorities urged residents to be cautious as the strong winds persisted.
