Strong winds fuel wildfire in Los Angeles, leading to evacuations in Pacific Palisades

A fast-moving fire in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles has forced over 30,000 residents to evacuate due to “life-threatening and destructive” winds. The fire broke out Tuesday morning and quickly grew to over 1,200 acres fueled by dry conditions and powerful winds expected to strengthen overnight. Bumper-to-bumper traffic and intense flames surrounded residents attempting to flee the area, with homes damaged and smoke seen across the neighborhood. More than 10,300 households and 13,200 structures were threatened by the fire with no reported injuries. Good Samaritans helped residents navigate to safety. Over 250 firefighters were battling the blaze which was rapidly spreading due to significant winds. Southern California’s dry conditions have primed the area for fast-moving wildfires, with forecasts of a life-threatening windstorm. Climate change has increased the risk of winter wildfires driven by the Santa Ana winds sweeping dry air into coastal areas. Humidity levels were expected to drop further, complicating firefighting efforts. Residents in neighboring communities were warned to be prepared for evacuation orders. The fire threatened not only Pacific Palisades but also adjacent canyons and communities such as Rustic Canyon and Topanga Canyon. Firefighters were on high alert due to the unpredictable nature of the wind-driven spot fires that could rapidly spread.
