President Jimmy Carter’s remains arrived in Washington as part of state funeral rites, with his body to lie in state for a second day on Wednesday. Carter served as the 39th president of the United States, passing away at the age of 100 on December 29. He was remembered at the Capitol on Tuesday for his religious faith, public service, and humanitarian work.
Vice President Kamala Harris and Speaker Mike Johnson offered tributes to Carter in the Capitol Rotunda, where his casket remains for public viewing. President Joe Biden, a longtime Carter ally, will deliver a eulogy at the state funeral at Washington National Cathedral on Thursday. Other former presidents, including President-elect Donald Trump, are expected to attend.
Following the funeral, Carter will be flown back to Georgia on Air Force One for a private funeral at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, where he taught Sunday School for decades. He will be buried next to his wife, Rosalynn Carter, where they lived out their lives together. Carter’s presidency has been viewed more favorably in hindsight compared to his time in office.
