Former Waterbury City Employee Sentenced for Involvement in Hit-and-Run Incident
A former Waterbury city employee, John M. Egan, was sentenced to prison time for his role in a hit-and-run incident that occurred on May 26, 2023. Egan struck 17-year-old Bryan Calle with his car and fled the scene, leaving Calle on life support at Connecticut’s Children’s Hospital in Hartford. Calle, now 19, continues to undergo physical therapy to regain his ability to walk.
Judge Joseph Schwartz sentenced Egan to 10 years, suspended after 2 years in jail, with 5 years of probation. Prior to the sentencing, Bryan’s father publicly forgave Egan and trusted the court’s decision. Egan expressed deep remorse for his actions and was described as a role model by his son. Egan’s wife, Alzira, also spoke about the profound impact the incident had on him.
As part of his probation, Egan is required to complete 100 hours of community service and have no contact with the Calle family. The case highlights the consequences of reckless behavior and the power of forgiveness in difficult situations.
