‘U.S. to Introduce ‘Cyber Trust Mark’ Label for Secure Devices’

The U.S. is starting a program called the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark to label internet-connected products like baby monitors and security cameras that meet basic cybersecurity standards. This program is similar to the Energy Star program and aims to help customers easily identify products that have passed a U.S. cybersecurity audit. The initiative does not cover computers or smartphones.

Internet of things devices are often targeted by hackers and can be used for cybercriminal activities. The Cyber Trust Mark program is voluntary and aims to encourage companies to prioritize security in their products. The U.S. government wants to give consumers confidence in the security of their devices, especially for items like home alarm systems and baby monitors.

Several major electronics retailers, including Best Buy and Amazon, have expressed support for the program. While no device can guarantee complete protection from hacking, there are various security measures that can be implemented to make products more secure. Companies seeking to display the mark can have their products audited by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

The program is overseen by the Federal Communications Commission and is set to have labeled products available by 2025. Additionally, the Biden administration is working on an executive order that will require federal agencies to only use products that have earned the Cyber Trust Mark by 2027.
