Residents in Southeastern Connecticut react to upcoming changes in highway exit numbers

Connecticut drivers will see new exit numbers on Route 2 and Route 11 as part of a federal mandate to standardize exit numbering in the state. The unveiling of new exit numbers will be done in stages, starting Tuesday in Southeastern Connecticut. The new exit signs will look the same but with updated numbers to align with federal guidelines. The Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) believes this change will help drivers determine how far they’ve traveled on a roadway and assist first responders in locating vehicles. The $17 million project includes updating supports, posts, and overhead signs to meet federal safety standards. While some drivers may find the change confusing at first, the DOT advises that the old exit numbers will be displayed under the new ones for two years. This initiative is part of a long-term project to renumber exits on highways and routes statewide, including Route 15 and I-291 later this year. The DOT appreciates the public’s patience as they implement these changes.
