A man has been arrested after causing panic at a youth sports event in the Town of Groton on Saturday. Police received multiple 911 calls reporting someone brandishing a gun at Poquonnock Plains Park, where hundreds of players and spectators were attending various games. It was later determined that no shots were actually fired at the park.
The incident began with a physical fight between two men on the sidelines of a youth flag football tournament, one of whom allegedly retrieved what appeared to be two guns from a vehicle, causing chaos in the crowd. Capt. Gregory McCarthy, who was off duty at the time, noticed the commotion and called for all available officers to respond.
Police from multiple departments arrived at the scene to assist, with authorities clarifying that the incident was not an active shooter situation. K9 teams, officers, and firefighters searched for the alleged guns but were unable to find them. The two men involved in the fight, a 43-year-old from Massachusetts and a 30-year-old from Bridgeport, have been taken into custody and are facing multiple charges.
Groton Police Chief L.J. Fusaro Jr. emphasized the importance of being alert in all surroundings, especially at public events like youth sports games. He hopes the incident serves as a lesson on how to handle conflicts and remain calm in challenging situations. Witnesses are encouraged to contact the police department with any information. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid Poquonnock Plains Park for the time being.
