The widow of late Padres owner Peter Seidler, Sheel Seidler, has filed a lawsuit against her brothers-in-law, Matt and Bob Seidler, seeking control of the franchise. She accuses them of breaches of duty and fraud, and claims they denied her and her children access to the owner’s box at Petco Park as well as making derogatory comments towards her. She wants to be the control person for the franchise, which is currently under Seidler Trusts.
John Seidler, another family member, was appointed to take over the team’s operations in December. Sheel Seidler claims that although she requested to be named control person, Matt Seidler chose John Seidler instead. A statement from the Peter Seidler Trust disputes Sheel’s claims, stating that Peter’s estate plan named three of his siblings as trustees and prohibited Sheel from serving in that capacity. John Seidler has been nominated as the control person for the team.
The lawsuit has raised concerns among fans about the team’s future, recruitment of talented players, and the possibility of the team being moved. Some fans believe Sheel Seidler has the ability to lead the team to success, while others are concerned about the impact of the family dispute on the franchise. Sports agent Bryce Dixon believes the power struggle in the front office may have a negative impact on recruiting free agents, and while moving the team may not be likely, the lawsuit could affect the team’s future. Overall, the outcome of the lawsuit remains uncertain as it unfolds.
