President-elect Donald Trump’s oldest son, Don Jr., visited Greenland as part of a private trip, sparking speculation about the incoming U.S. administration seeking to acquire the mineral-rich Danish territory. Trump emphasized the importance of Greenland for national security and mentioned the possibility of using military force to gain control of it. Greenland’s government clarified that Don Jr.’s visit was private and they would not meet with him officially.
Greenland, home to a U.S. military base, has been a subject of interest for the U.S., China, Russia, and others due to its strategic location in the Arctic. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that Greenland is not for sale and called the U.S. Denmark’s most important ally. Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede has called for independence from Denmark, but has stressed that Greenland is not interested in becoming part of the U.S.
Greenland gained self-rule in 1979 and currently exercises control over its parliament, while Denmark still manages foreign and defense policies. The idea of the U.S. purchasing Greenland is not new, with President Trump previously considering it during his first term. Despite Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland for national security and freedom, Greenland’s government and residents have expressed opposition to the idea. Support for Greenland’s independence from Denmark remains strong, and the territory’s future remains uncertain as it heads into an upcoming election.
