Connecticut’s first Black woman U.S. Attorney, Vanessa Roberts Avery, announced her resignation from her post on Monday, just hours before Donald Trump’s inauguration. Avery, who began her role in 2022 after being appointed by President Biden, will step down at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17. She expressed gratitude to Biden for the opportunity to serve the people of Connecticut and the nation.
Avery emphasized her dedication to community engagement to reduce crime in Connecticut in her resignation letter. She did not disclose her future plans after leaving the office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc Silverman is set to take over the position following Avery’s departure.
Avery’s resignation is part of a trend of Biden-appointed U.S. attorneys in the tristate area stepping down, including Manhattan U.S. Attorney Damian Williams and Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Breon Peace. Avery’s career has spanned various top positions in the legal field, including roles in the Connecticut Attorney General’s office before her appointment as U.S. Attorney.
