On January 6, 2021, a violent insurrection took place at the U.S. Capitol as supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the building to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s election victory. The chaos resulted in the death of a Trump supporter, Ashli Babbitt, and Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick. More than 1,580 individuals have been charged in connection to the riot.
While this date has become infamous due to the events of 2021, January 6 has seen other significant historical moments. In 1919, Theodore Roosevelt passed away, and in 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt outlined his “Four Freedoms.” Notable events in entertainment include Elvis Presley’s final appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in 1957, and the debut of the game show “Wheel of Fortune” in 1975. In sports, the longest game in NBA history occurred in 1951, with the Indianapolis Olympians defeating the Rochester Royals.
In more recent history, on January 6, 1994, Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was attacked, leading to the imprisonment of four individuals. The “Blizzard of 1996” began on this date as well, causing significant damage and loss of life. In 2016, baseball legend Ken Griffey Jr. was elected to the Hall of Fame with a record-high voting percentage.
While the events of January 6, 2021, will forever be remembered, it is important to also reflect on the other significant moments that have occurred on this date throughout history.
