NYC congestion pricing to begin as scheduled on Sunday following final lawsuit ruling

Just before the implementation of congestion pricing in New York City, a U.S. district court ruled on a suit from the state of New Jersey regarding environmental concerns. The judge’s decision allowed the Federal Highway Administration to review the plan, but did not prevent the MTA from moving forward with the toll starting on January 5th. The congestion pricing plan includes peak fees of $9 during weekdays and weekends, with a 75% discount during off-peak times. The state of New Jersey filed the lawsuit in fear of increased traffic on their side of the river, citing potential environmental harm and monetary losses. Despite New Jersey’s opposition, the court’s ruling allows congestion pricing to begin as planned.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul offered a settlement to New Jersey, but no agreement was reached. The MTA anticipates a 10% reduction in cars and trucks following the implementation of congestion pricing, which will fund public transit improvements. Prior to the New Jersey ruling, a federal judge in New York denied a separate suit seeking to pause congestion pricing. The judge determined that the plaintiffs did not present a likelihood of success on their claims, reinforcing the MTA’s plans to proceed with the toll system. Despite ongoing legal challenges, congestion pricing is set to begin this weekend, with promises of reduced congestion and modernized transportation infrastructure in the region.
