Ian Cramer, the son of Senator Kevin Cramer, was sentenced to 28 years in prison for multiple charges connected to the death of a sheriff’s deputy during a law enforcement chase. He pleaded guilty to nine charges, including homicide while fleeing a peace officer, reckless endangerment, and drug possession. The crash that killed Deputy Paul Martin occurred after Cramer veered and crashed into a patrol vehicle. The judge noted that Cramer was unlikely to serve the full 28 years, as parole was a possibility. Cramer’s father, a Republican senator, has stated that his son struggles with mental illness, including severe paranoia and hallucinations. Despite this, Cramer was still found guilty and sentenced to a lengthy prison term. The North Dakota Highway Patrol confirmed the details of the incident that led to Deputy Martin’s death. Both the state’s attorney and public defender listed for Cramer did not provide immediate comments following the sentencing. Senator Cramer’s spokesperson also did not respond to requests for comment.
