The FBI has issued a memo to sports leagues warning that star athletes are vulnerable to burglaries due to displaying valuables on social media and having public travel schedules. The memo advises athletes to limit imagery of valuables on their public accounts to avoid attracting burglars. Recent victims of burglaries include athletes such as Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes, Bobby Portis Jr., Joe Burrow, Luka Dončić, and the fiancée of Dak Prescott. The FBI believes the burglaries are carried out by South American organized theft groups that target athletes with high-value belongings. Recent cases involving burglaries of high-wealth estates have been linked to criminals from South America, who exploit loopholes in the Visa Waiver Program to enter the United States and commit crimes. Authorities have seen a rise in burglaries targeting high-profile individuals, including athletes and actors, across the country. The LAPD Chief of Detectives noted that suspects linked to these crimes are part of transnational gangs and investigations have expanded to several states nationwide. The FBI urges the public to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement to help protect public safety.
