CT High School Sports Recap: The Year 2024

The 2024 high school championship games were filled with moments of glory, last-second losses, and improbable victories. History was made as a woman coached a boys basketball team in a state championship for the first time, and she was pitted against a 21-year-old in his first season as head coach. Other highlights included a soccer team winning a state title in the final second of a game, reminiscent of a similar victory by the school’s basketball team 11 years ago.

Notable retirements were seen in successful coaches from Southington (softball) and Glastonbury (track). The Greater Hartford area also saw a boys tennis player win the State Open title for the first time since 2007.

In fall sports, Windsor’s football team had a successful season, finishing 12-1 and reaching the Class MM championship game. Farmington boys soccer and Mercy girls soccer also had memorable championship wins, with Mercy’s buzzer-beating goal making it onto SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays.

In spring sports, notable victories included Farmington’s volleyball championship win and Coventry’s baseball team clinching the Class S title. The story continued in softball with Southington coach Davina Hernandez stepping down after leading the team to five state titles in the past 10 years.

Overall, the 2024 high school sports season was filled with memorable moments, upsets, and historic achievements, showcasing the talent and determination of young athletes across the state.
