Connecticut man Lance Morales is facing charges of killing 20-year-old Jessiah Mercado and her 4-month-old son Messiah Diaz in a drive-by shooting last November. Allegedly, Morales opened fire on the car because Mercado owed him $400 for using his SUV, at a rate of $100 a day. Despite Mercado telling Morales her infant son was inside the vehicle, he proceeded to shoot at the car, resulting in the deaths of Mercado and her son. Morales was arrested in Puerto Rico after a four-day manhunt and extradited back to Connecticut. Morales is charged with multiple crimes, including two counts of murder, and could face life in prison without parole if convicted. During his first court appearance, he was held on a $5 million bail. The incident has shocked the community and raised questions about the motive behind the senseless act of violence. The Hartford Police Department is continuing to investigate the case.
