Former President Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, will be honored with a full state funeral following his recent passing. President Joe Biden has signed a proclamation initiating the state funeral, with American flags flying at half-staff for thirty days.
The state funeral will begin in Carter’s home state of Georgia, where his casket will first lie in repose at the Carter Center in Atlanta. His body will then be flown to Washington, D.C., where he will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol and be honored with a ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda. Following this, a state funeral at the National Cathedral is expected to last around an hour.
After the funeral, Carter will be buried in Plains, Georgia, alongside his wife, Rosalynn Carter. Traditions during the state funeral will include a three volley salute, a 21-gun salute, a horse-drawn caisson carrying the casket, and military music such as “Hail to the Chief” and “Taps.” The state funeral is typically reserved for former presidents, although others designated by the president can also receive this honor.
