A recount scheduled for Tuesday afternoon in Torrington will help determine the final outcome in the 65th House district race between Republican Joe Canino and Democratic state Rep. Michelle Cook. Canino had initially claimed victory with early unconfirmed results showing him in the lead, but a recount was announced due to issues with tabulators, printing errors on ballots, and high demand for same-day voter registrations. The recount, to take place at City Hall, will include absentee ballots, early voting ballots, and same-day registration ballots. Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas emphasized the extensive work needed to ensure every vote is accurately counted. Additionally, the 8th state Senate district recount is expected to confirm Democrat Paul Honig’s victory over Republican state Sen. Lisa Seminara. Despite the decline in voter turnout compared to the 2020 election, election officials emphasized transparency and accuracy in the recount process. The recount deadline in Connecticut is Nov. 12, with local election workers allowed to recanvass for discrepancies and mandated recounts for margins of victory fewer than 20 votes. Canino and Cook, along with Seminara and Honig, expressed confidence in the recount process and a commitment to serving their constituents.
