A bipartisan act that is awaiting President Joe Biden’s signature could potentially boost Social Security payments for nearly 3 million Americans. The Social Security Fairness Act, which has passed the Senate, aims to repeal two provisions of current law that limit benefits for retirees who receive pensions from other sources. The act heavily impacts teachers, police officers, firefighters, and public servants, who could see increases in their benefits if the act is signed into law.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut has been a vocal supporter of the act, calling the current limitations on benefits an “injustice” and stating that more than 32,000 people in Connecticut are not receiving their full Social Security benefits. The repeal of the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset would not only affect retirees but also their spouses and family members.
While the act has received bipartisan support, some lawmakers have raised concerns about its cost and fiscal impact. Despite this, it is expected that Biden will sign the act into law, potentially bringing about life-changing increases in Social Security payments for those affected.
