“Rising Numbers of Norovirus Cases: Ways to Stay Protected” – NBC Connecticut

A recent surge in norovirus outbreaks across the country has health officials concerned. The CDC reports that there have been 91 outbreaks of this highly contagious virus reported in a single week in December, marking a significant increase from the previous week. Norovirus, commonly referred to as the stomach flu, can cause symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. It is the most common infectious cause of food poisoning in the United States.

Dr. Paul Anthony, an infectious disease doctor, stresses the importance of handwashing as a preventative measure against norovirus. The virus is spread through direct contact with an infected person, touching contaminated surfaces, or consuming contaminated food or liquids. The CDC recommends staying home for at least two days after symptoms subside to prevent the spread of the virus.

While Connecticut has not been hit as hard as other parts of the country, cases of norovirus have been reported in the state as well. Health officials advise the public to take necessary precautions to avoid contracting or spreading the virus.
