Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has passed away at the age of 100, leaving behind a legacy of peace, humanitarianism, and human rights advocacy. Carter, the longest-lived American president, entered hospice care in February 2023, nearly two years after his wife, Rosalynn, passed away. He is survived by his four children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
Carter’s time in office was marked by moments of turmoil, including the Iran hostage crisis and energy crises, but also significant achievements, such as the Camp David Accords and improvements in air travel accessibility. After leaving office, Carter founded The Carter Center, a humanitarian organization that has worked in over 70 countries to promote democracy, human rights, and public health.
Carter’s deep religious convictions influenced his post-presidency actions, including his nominations of women and non-white judges. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts. Carter’s life and impact will be honored with public observances in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., followed by a private burial in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.
