San Diego County’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement Policy Gains National Recognition – NBC Connecticut

The battle over immigration enforcement in San Diego County has sparked controversy ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration. Trump’s incoming border czar, Tom Homan, criticized a measure passed by the County Board that limits the use of resources for immigration enforcement. The new policy prohibits the Sheriff from cooperating with ICE, going against previous state law exceptions.

Sheriff Kelly Martinez has refused to enforce the policy, emphasizing the importance of community engagement. The policy has also drawn criticism from the America First Legal Foundation and Trump advisor Stephen Miller. However, County Board Chairwoman Nora Vargas defended the policy, emphasizing unity, equity, and justice for all while upholding the law.

Advocates for immigrant rights have called for the enforcement of the policy to build trust in the community. They are considering legal action if the policy is not implemented, especially in anticipation of Trump’s immigration plan and mass deportations.

With tensions rising, Homan expects the policy to be litigated. The San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium is prepared to respond to any changes in immigration enforcement under the new administration.

The battle over immigration policies in San Diego County is likely to continue as the county grapples with the balance between federal laws, state laws, and community needs.
