Plane crash in South Korea claims lives of at least 28 – NBC Connecticut

A tragic incident occurred at a South Korean airport on Sunday as a plane veered off the runway, burst into flames, and killed at least 28 people on board. The Jeju Air aircraft, carrying 181 passengers, skidded off the runway and hit a barrier, causing the fire to engulf the plane. Emergency officials said that the landing gear malfunctioned, leading to the crash.

Rescue efforts were underway as emergency workers tried to pull people from the burning wreckage. The fire was almost extinguished, but the death toll continued to rise. Investigations into the cause of the crash were ongoing.

This incident comes at a time of political turmoil in South Korea, with President Yoon Suk Yeol recently imposing martial law and facing impeachment. Acting President Han Duck-soo was impeached, suspending his duties and putting Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok in charge. The government deployed all available resources to assist in the rescue efforts. President Yoon’s office organized an emergency meeting to address the crash and its implications.
