A 13-year-old from Hamden was arrested in North Haven after attempting to steal a delivery driver’s vehicle while her child was still inside. The incident occurred outside of a Jersey Mike’s restaurant when the driver left the car running with her 8-year-old inside to pick up food. The 13-year-old entered the car and tried to drive away, causing the driver to scream for her child. The moving car was stopped by bystanders shortly after. The teen has been charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, assault, reckless endangerment, risk of injury to a minor, and interfering. Debra Bryans, the driver, described the traumatic experience of trying to stop her car from being stolen with her child inside. This shocking event serves as a reminder of the dangers of leaving a vehicle unattended while running, especially with a child inside. The community is thankful for the swift actions of bystanders that helped prevent a potentially tragic situation.
