A man in California was detained by the FBI and had his guns temporarily seized after allegedly communicating with the 15-year-old shooter who killed two people at a Wisconsin school. The man, who had been plotting a mass shooting with the Wisconsin shooter, admitted to discussing targeting a government building with explosives. The gun violence order was served at his home in Carlsbad, San Diego County, and a court hearing is set for January 3. While the order required the man to turn over firearms and not possess any guns, it is unclear if any were seized.
The FBI declined to comment, and the investigation is being led by Madison police. There is no confirmation of criminal charges at this time, and no cases related to the man’s name were found online. The school shooting at Abundant Life Christian School resulted in two deaths and several injuries. The shooter, Natalie Rupnow, a freshman, opened fire in a study hall. The victims were identified as staff member Erin West, 42, and student Rubi Vergara, 14. Two guns were found at the school, and the ATF has completed a data trace on them.
The investigation is ongoing, with police looking into Rupnow’s social media accounts and trying to connect with anyone who interacted with her before the shooting. The community of Carlsbad has been assured that there is no threat at this time. The motive for the shooting has not been determined, and two students remain hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
