Workers at seven Amazon facilities went on strike on Thursday as part of an effort by the Teamsters to push for a labor agreement during a crucial shopping period. The strikes are in response to Amazon ignoring a deadline set by the union for contract negotiations. Despite this, Amazon claims it does not expect an impact on its operations.
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents nearly 10,000 workers at 10 Amazon facilities, including a warehouse in Staten Island where workers have unionized. The strikes are taking place in various locations across the U.S.
Meanwhile, Amazon has been challenging the union representation at the Staten Island warehouse, claiming that the delivery drivers organized by the Teamsters are not their employees. The Teamsters argue that Amazon controls the drivers’ operations and should be classified as an employer.
As a result of the strikes and ongoing labor disputes, Amazon shares rose more than 1% before the opening bell on Thursday. The situation highlights the ongoing tension between workers, unions, and Amazon as they navigate labor agreements and employee classifications.
