Football legend Herschel Walker has been chosen by President-elect Donald Trump to be the ambassador to the Bahamas. Trump announced this decision on his social media platform, describing Walker as a successful businessman, philanthropist, and former Heisman Trophy winner.
Walker is a Republican who previously ran for a U.S. Senate seat in Georgia with Trump’s endorsement, but was unsuccessful. Despite his football career and name recognition, he faced damaging allegations during the campaign.
To assume the ambassador position, Walker will need his nomination approved by the Republican-led Senate next year. Trump has also nominated art collector Nicole McGraw as the U.S. ambassador to Croatia, demonstrating his pattern of selecting loyalists for diplomatic posts.
The former president also announced other appointments, including Charles Kushner as ambassador to France, Rep. Elise Stefanik as ambassador to the United Nations, and former Sen. David Perdue as U.S. ambassador to China. Additionally, Kelly Loeffler was chosen to lead the Small Business Administration.
These appointments show Trump’s continued loyalty to his associates and supporters. Walker’s long-standing friendship with Trump was highlighted in the 2020 Republican National Convention, where he spoke about their relationship. The former football player’s new role as ambassador to the Bahamas marks a new chapter in his career as a public servant.
