Palestinian families are taking legal action against the State Department due to U.S. support for Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which have resulted in numerous deaths and a humanitarian crisis in the region. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, accuses the U.S. of making exceptions for Israel to bypass the 1997 Leahy law, which prohibits foreign military aid in cases of human rights violations.
One of the plaintiffs, Ahmed Moor, a Palestinian American, spoke out about the constant fear and displacement his family in Gaza has faced as a result of Israeli attacks carried out with American weapons. The lawsuit, supported by legal nonprofit DAWN, aims to hold the U.S. accountable for enabling these harms by providing military assistance to Israel.
The State Department has not yet commented on the lawsuit, with spokesperson Matthew Miller stating he was unaware of the case and deferring comments to the Department of Justice. The plaintiffs are seeking justice for the violence and suffering caused by the U.S.-backed Israeli military campaign in Gaza, highlighting the need for accountability and adherence to laws governing foreign military aid.
