Mystic Aquarium outfits sea turtle with prosthetic harness to aid in swimming

Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut is using a 3D printed prosthetic to help a green sea turtle named Charlotte who was injured in a boat strike. The incident left Charlotte with a damaged shell and spinal cord, causing buoyancy syndrome where gases build up in his GI tract, making his rear end rise. In an effort to help Charlotte swim more normally, the aquarium worked with Adia, a 3D printing solutions company, and New Balance Athletics to create a custom-made harness with weights attached strategically. Previous attempts using straps and epoxy were unsuccessful. The goal is to gradually adjust the weights to help Charlotte level out in the water. The aquarium plans to share this innovative solution with other facilities rehabilitating injured sea turtles. Dr. Molly Martony, senior veterinarian at Mystic Aquarium, noted that it is essential for Charlotte to adjust slowly to the new prosthetic as he has been swimming in an abnormal way for a long time. This breakthrough could be life-changing for the beloved sea turtle and help improve his quality of life.
