Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised the mother of missing journalist Austin Tice that Israel will not conduct airstrikes near a secret prison in Damascus where she believes her son may be held. Debra Tice shared this information in an interview with MSNBC. Netanyahu’s assurance was conveyed in a letter responding to a request from Debra Tice to the Israeli government. She believes her son may be in Mt. Qasioun prison, where a hidden tunnel has not been fully explored. NBC’s Richard Engel found a cell in the prison where a fellow prisoner claimed Austin had been held in 2022, a claim Debra Tice has verified. Despite the lack of U.S. personnel on the ground in Syria, the State Department has not ruled out sending officials in the future if necessary. Debra Tice has been advocating for U.S. involvement in finding her son for 12 years and remains hopeful for his safe return.
