Connecticut State Police are responding to an increase in drone sightings across the northeast, including in Connecticut. A truck equipped with technology is being used to monitor the skies and ensure drones are being flown legally. The state has received numerous reports of drones flying at night, prompting collaboration and information sharing to investigate these sightings.
The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI stated that many of the reported drone sightings in New Jersey are actually manned aircraft operating lawfully. Operating a drone is regulated under federal law, with specific conditions that must be followed.
Connecticut State Police Sgt. Kevin Pelkey highlighted the importance of education around drone usage and encouraged reporting any suspicious activity. The public can report drone sightings through the CT SAFE app, by calling 866-HLS-TIPS, or at ct.gov/SAR. These reports help authorities determine which sightings require further attention. Pelkey emphasized the need for detailed information in reports, such as how the drone was flying and its location.
