The House Ethics Committee has voted to release a report detailing the findings of an investigation into former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., which is expected to be made public soon after the House vote to keep the government open. The investigation looked into allegations of sexual misconduct, drug use, improper gifts, special favors, and obstruction of a House probe. Gaetz resigned from the House last month after scrutiny from senators and details from women speaking to the Ethics committee. He has denied any wrongdoing. The report’s release goes against the wishes of House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., who argued it would set a “terrible precedent” to release a report on a former member of Congress, but the Ethics Committee has published reports on previous members. Gaetz, who was also investigated by the Department of Justice for sex trafficking allegations, spoke out against the committee and his accusers in a post on Wednesday, denying any criminal wrongdoing. He also announced a new job as an anchor on the One America News Network in the New Year. The release of the report is significant as Gaetz remains a close ally of Trump and has flirted with a bid for Florida governor.
