Study finds medication abortions may be more painful than anticipated by women

A study published in the journal BMJ Sexual & Reproductive Health found that many women are surprised by the amount of pain they experience during a medication abortion, with more than 60% of abortions in the United States being medication abortions. The study surveyed women in the U.K. who had undergone a medication abortion and found that many were not prepared for the level of pain they experienced. Most women ranked their pain as at least a 4 out of 10, with about half saying the pain was more severe than expected.

Women reported feeling unprepared for the pain, with some describing it as similar to contractions during labor. The study emphasized the need for detailed and realistic pain counseling for women undergoing medication abortions. Factors such as past experiences with pain, including menstrual cramps and childbirth, can affect how much pain a person may feel during the procedure.

While medication abortions are generally safe, it is important for women to be informed about what to expect during the procedure and how to manage pain. Taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as ibuprofen, along with anti-nausea medication, can help alleviate pain and discomfort. Additionally, using a heating pad or hot water bottle on the lower abdomen can help relieve pain. It is important to seek medical help if pain is severe, especially if it is located on one side of the abdomen, as it could indicate a complication such as an ectopic pregnancy. Moral support and having someone close by can also make a difference in managing pain and discomfort during a medication abortion.
