Thousands of people in Connecticut are getting their medical debt forgiven, but for most residents, unexpected medical bills remain a common issue. Consumers Checkbook, a nonprofit organization, warns that surprise bills are a growing problem due to coding errors or services not being properly submitted to insurance. Consumers are advised to carefully review unexpected medical bills, confirm if the provider is in-network, and ensure that insurance was billed correctly.
Executive editor Kevin Brasler suggests not immediately paying surprise bills and recommends doing research on pricing as well as asking for price reductions or forgiveness programs from providers if needed. NBC CT Responds and Telemundo Responde have received over 2,000 medical bill issues since 2021, with 380 claims being denied due to communication breakdowns between medical and insurance providers. The program is available to help consumers with unresolved issues by filling out a consumer complaint form. Overall, it is important for individuals to be proactive and informed when dealing with unexpected medical bills to avoid unnecessary financial burdens.
