Eleven Indian nationals and one Georgian national were found dead at a ski resort in Georgia, possibly due to carbon monoxide poisoning. They were employees at a restaurant in the popular ski resort of Gudauri where they were found in a resting area on the second floor with a power generator that was turned on after a power disruption. Investigators found no signs of violence on the bodies and are treating the deaths as negligent manslaughter. The Indian Embassy in Tbilisi is working to repatriate the remains to India.
Power generators release deadly amounts of carbon monoxide and should be used outside to prevent poisoning. In the United States, portable generators are a leading cause of consumer deaths, claiming an average of 70 lives each year. The exact cause of death for the 12 individuals in Georgia is still being determined by forensic experts.
