Man charged in seventh woman’s death related to Gilgo Beach serial killings

A New York architect, Rex Heuermann, facing murder charges in the Gilgo Beach killings was charged with the murder of a seventh woman, Valerie Mack. Mack, who had been working as an escort in Philadelphia, was last seen in 2000 in New Jersey. Heuermann is also charged with killing six other women whose remains were found on Long Island. The investigation into the Gilgo Beach killings began in 2010 when 10 sets of human remains were found, leading to fears of a serial killer.

Prosecutors found a likely match between human hair found with Mack’s remains and Heuermann’s daughter’s genetic profile. Heuermann has been charged with the deaths of multiple women, including Amber Lynn Costello, Megan Waterman, and Melissa Barthelemy. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and prosecutors uncovered a file on his hard drive detailing his killings. Authorities released new renderings of an unidentified victim, previously identified as male but may have presented outwardly as female and died in 2006. Prosecutors are also investigating the death of Karen Vergata, whose remains were found in 1996 and identified in 2022.
