In a recent ruling, a New York judge upheld a jury’s verdict that found President-elect Trump guilty of felony charges in a hush money case involving adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Despite Trump’s objections that the evidence presented was protected by presidential immunity, the judge determined that the evidence was related to unofficial conduct and thus not protected. The Manhattan District Attorney argued that the evidence presented was overwhelming and that Trump’s guilt was clear.
This hush money case marks the first-ever criminal prosecution of a former president to reach trial. Trump continues to maintain his innocence and has called the judge’s ruling a violation of Supreme Court decisions on immunity. However, special counsel Jack Smith has dismissed charges against Trump in other cases, and his Georgia criminal case is on hold pending a pretrial defense challenge. The judge has yet to rule on the dismissal of the jury’s verdict in the hush money case.
