A congressional panel of Democrats recommended Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly over Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez for the top Democratic post on the House Oversight Committee. Connolly received 34 votes, while Ocasio-Cortez received 27. This decision came after the position opened up when Rep. Jamie Raskin challenged Rep. Jerry Nadler for a post on the Judiciary Committee. In a surprising move, the panel also recommended Rep. Angie Craig as the top Democrat on the Agriculture Committee, beating out more senior rivals Jim Costa and David Scott. For the Natural Resources Committee, the panel recommended Rep. Jared Huffman over Rep. Melanie Stansbury. The full Democratic Caucus is expected to vote on these recommendations, although there have been instances in the past where the caucus overruled the panel’s decisions and selected a different candidate.
