Renowned photographer Yasuomi Hashimura, also known as Hashi, passed away at the age of 79 after being attacked and pushed to the ground in Midtown Manhattan. He was known for his significant impact on the art world, the Japanese diaspora, and as a resource for immigrants settling in New York City. Hashimura immigrated to the U.S. from Japan in 1968 and opened his own studio in Manhattan in 1974, shooting ad campaigns for major brands like Coca-Cola and Panasonic. He also provided guidance and support to many Japanese newcomers to the city. His funeral was held in Greenwich Village, and he was remembered for his resilience and cultural exchange between Japan and the U.S. In 1985, his work “Rainbow in Space” was featured as a limited edition art print for a United Nations University poster. Hashimura’s unique technique involving painting with darkroom chemicals using calligraphy was showcased in his book “Hashigraphy,” while his collection “Memory Fragments” captured abstract moments in Tokyo. His impact will be cherished and remembered by many, with his work continuing to inspire and influence the art world.
