Rep. Jeff Currey of East Hartford, who ended his reelection campaign in July, will be serving as the chief of staff to House Majority Leader Jason Rojas in the upcoming legislative term. This move confirms earlier speculation about Currey’s future plans. He will be taking over from Christy Scott, whose removal by Rojas has caused some tension within the House Democrats.
Currey, a well-regarded member of a political family and a former deputy majority leader, is known for his work in the Education Committee. Having been unopposed in his district in 2022, Currey’s decision to become Rojas’ chief of staff was unexpected but not entirely surprising given his experience and skill set in legislative matters.
With this new role, Currey will be stepping away from elected office for the first time since 1982, when his family’s political legacy began. Despite his decision not to seek reelection, Currey will continue to contribute to the legislative process as Rojas’ chief of staff.
The circumstances surrounding Scott’s removal and transfer are under review by the Office of Legislative Management, and her next steps involve joining the office of House Speaker Matt Ritter as a sessional lawyer. Currey’s appointment as chief of staff marks a new chapter in his political career and closes the door on his time as an elected official in East Hartford.
