California legislators to start special session to fortify state laws against potential changes in federal policies – NBC Connecticut

California Governor Gavin Newsom and state lawmakers are gearing up to protect the state’s progressive policies in anticipation of another Trump presidency. The special session, set to begin on Monday, will focus on providing additional funding to the attorney general’s office for a legal battle against anticipated federal challenges.

California, a Democratic stronghold, has often clashed with Trump over issues such as immigration, environmental regulations, and wildfires. Newsom and lawmakers are preparing to resist Trump’s mass deportation plans and potential threats to progressive legislation.

The state Attorney General, Rob Bonta, has pledged to protect California’s immigrant population while Newsom has proposed reviving a rebate program for electric vehicle purchases if the federal tax credit is eliminated. The California legislature is expected to discuss ways to safeguard dozens of laws targeted by the Trump administration, including those providing sanctuary for people seeking abortions.

Republican lawmakers, however, criticize Newsom’s actions as being out of touch with the concerns of Californians. Despite facing a budget deficit, state officials believe that investing in legal protection now is crucial given the potential challenges posed by a second Trump administration.

California has a history of challenging the first Trump administration in court, leading to legal victories and financial returns for the state. With Democrats outnumbering Republicans by a large margin in the state, Newsom and lawmakers are gearing up for another round of resistance to defend California’s progressive values.
