Yale University is set to offer a new course in the upcoming spring semester focusing on the cultural impact of Beyoncé Knowles Carter. Titled Beyoncé Makes History, the course will be taught by Professor Daphne A. Brooks, a leading expert in African American Studies, Women’s Gender & Sexuality Studies, and Music at Yale.
According to Brooks, Beyoncé’s work has been included in her curriculum since 2008, with particular emphasis on Beyoncé’s 2013 self-titled album as a pivotal moment in her career. The course will delve into Beyoncé’s albums and their connections to topics such as African-American liberation struggles, Jim Crow segregation, and LGBTQ+ issues.
Students at Yale are excited about the opportunity to critically engage with Beyoncé’s music and its cultural significance. Professor Brooks emphasizes that the course is not a celebrity-focused class but rather a chance for students to think analytically about the media they consume and its broader cultural implications.
The course is expected to spark deep and meaningful conversations among students, providing unique perspectives on topics that impact people on a daily basis. With its focus on intellectual traditions and African-American studies, Beyoncé Makes History is poised to offer students a new lens through which to view contemporary culture.
