Former Giants pitcher Blake Snell has reportedly signed a five-year, $182 million contract with their biggest rival, the Los Angeles Dodgers. The deal is pending a physical and marks the first nine-figure contract of the offseason. Snell seemingly confirmed the news on his Instagram account.
The Dodgers have a history of shattering free-agency expectations with their aggressive spending, including signing stars like Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts. Their willingness to defer money to future years has allowed them to secure top talent and pay off with their eighth World Series title in 2024.
Snell’s lone season with the Giants started off rocky but he quickly found his Cy Young form in the second half of the season, culminating in a no-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds. After opting out of his contract with the Giants, Snell became the most sought-after pitcher on the market, with negotiations ending swiftly as the Dodgers made their move.
The deal with the Dodgers includes deferred money, similar to their strategy with past signings. Snell’s move to the Dodgers marks a significant shake-up in the NL West division and sets the stage for an interesting rivalry between the two teams in the upcoming seasons.
