Progress is being made in downtown New London following the collapse of the former First Congregational Church. Eastern Connecticut Housing Opportunities (ECHO) has purchased the property and plans to build a 17,000 square foot building with commercial space on the first floor and 46 apartments above. The new building will incorporate granite from the fallen church and take inspiration from historic architecture in the area.
Mayor Michael Passero is excited to see something new replace the iconic church, and local businesses like Bravado Barber Shop are optimistic about the impact the new development will have on the community. A public hearing on the proposal is set for December 5, where residents can share their thoughts on the project.
If approved, ECHO hopes to secure funding for construction and break ground next fall. This project not only revitalizes the area but also aligns with ECHO’s mission to provide affordable housing in the community.
