Former Governor M. Jodi Rell, who passed away last week in Florida at the age of 78, will be honored with a public viewing at the Capitol on December 3rd, followed by a funeral at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Hartford. The residents of Connecticut are invited to pay their respects and celebrate Rell’s lasting legacy. Rell, a member of the Episcopal Church who often attended Mass with her son’s Catholic family, will be buried at the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown alongside her late husband, Lou Rell, a former Navy aviator. The funeral services at the Cathedral have received special permission from the archdiocese.
Rell’s political career began in 1984 when she was elected to the state House of Representatives. She went on to serve as lieutenant governor in 1994 and became governor in 2004 after Gov. John G. Rowland’s resignation. She was re-elected to a full term in 2006. Ray Dunaway, a friend of the Rell family and former WTIC-AM morning host, will be one of the speakers at her funeral.
The arrangements for the services were still being finalized as of Tuesday, but the public is encouraged to attend the viewing and funeral to honor and remember Governor Rell’s contributions to the state of Connecticut. Her internment will be a private service, with her final resting place next to her beloved husband at the Veterans Cemetery.
