National Adoption Day Celebrated in New Haven
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Friday marked National Adoption Day, a special occasion aimed at promoting child adoption and honoring those who provide loving homes for children. The day allows the press rare access to observe adoption proceedings, highlighting the joy of families welcoming new members.
In a heartfelt ceremony at the Whalley Avenue courthouse, 2-year-old Kenyatta stole the spotlight, with her image proudly displayed on blankets and shirts worn by her family. Judge Lynn Dawson addressed Doris Brown, Kenyatta’s foster mother, acknowledging her unwavering love and dedication during Kenyatta’s time in her care. "That uncertainty ends today," the judge declared, as the adoption was officially finalized.
For Brown, who has fostered numerous children over the past two decades but had never been able to raise a baby from birth, this adoption was a long-cherished dream. Unable to conceive, Brown expressed that she had envisioned this moment for years. "This moment has been awesome," she said, reflecting on the profound significance of the occasion.
Kenyatta was one of 40 children adopted in Connecticut on National Adoption Day, underscoring the ongoing need for foster and adoptive parents for children of all ages and backgrounds. Commissioner Jodi Hill-Lilly of the Connecticut Department of Children and Families emphasized the transformative impact foster care can have on a child’s life, stating, "There’s nothing more fulfilling than to know that you’ve made a difference."
As her adoption was finalized, Kenyatta’s life was forever changed, solidifying her bond with Brown, the only mother she has ever known. For Brown, this calling to foster and adopt is not just a role but a mission to change lives and generations. "If I’m able to help just one child to change a generation, then I believe this was my assignment," she said, with Kenyatta basking in the support from her loving family.
