Tractor-Trailer Fire on I-91 North Causes Traffic Disruptions in Wethersfield
Wethersfield, CT – A significant incident unfolded on Friday morning as a tractor-trailer hauling 7,500 gallons of fuel caught fire on Interstate 91 North near exit 24. State police reported that they received an emergency call at approximately 7:42 a.m., prompting a swift response from local authorities.
The driver managed to escape the cab safely and sustained no injuries, according to state police. Fire departments from both Wethersfield and Rocky Hill arrived promptly to extinguish the blaze, which led to comprehensive traffic control measures. Authorities closed I-91 North and South, along with rerouting oncoming traffic from Route 3, to ensure safety and facilitate emergency operations.
As the fire was quelled, state troopers worked diligently to clear nearby motorists from potential danger. Fortunately, I-91 South was reopened shortly after the flames were extinguished, while the left two lanes of I-91 North were restored to traffic soon thereafter.
The investigation into the fire is ongoing, with the state police Fire & Explosives Investigation Unit on site to determine the cause of the incident. Additionally, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) has also responded to address any environmental concerns related to the fuel spill.
Authorities are encouraging all motorists to exercise caution in the area as officials continue to manage traffic and conduct investigations. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
